Understanding the Celsius to Fahrenheit Scale

The Celsius scale, used by most of the world, defines water freezing at 0°C and boiling at 100°C. Fahrenheit, primarily used in the United States, sets water freezing at 32°F and boiling at 212°F. Converting between them requires a specific formula.

The Conversion Formula

°F = (°C × 9/5) + 32

This formula works for any Celsius temperature. The factor 9/5 (or 1.8) comes from the ratio of the temperature ranges: there are 180 Fahrenheit degrees between freezing and boiling water, but only 100 Celsius degrees, hence 180/100 = 9/5.

Step-by-Step Example

Convert 25°C to Fahrenheit:

Step 1: Multiply 25 × 9/5 = 25 × 1.8 = 45 Step 2: Add 32: 45 + 32 = 77°F

So 25°C = 77°F (room temperature)

Reverse Conversion: Fahrenheit to Celsius

°C = (°F - 32) × 5/9

Example: Convert 98.6°F to Celsius

Step 1: Subtract 32: 98.6 - 32 = 66.6 Step 2: Multiply by 5/9: 66.6 × 5/9 = 37°C

Why Different Temperature Scales?

Historical development created these different scales. Celsius was designed to be intuitive with water's properties. Fahrenheit was created earlier with different reference points. Accuracy and Rounding
